The new How to Train Your Dragon movie—opening in theaters this weekend—is yet another live-action remake of a beloved animated film. No one asked for it, but, hey, these remakes keep making money!
Written and directed by Dean DeBlois—who also co-wrote and co-directed the original animated movie—this 2025 movie appears to be, basically, a shot-for-shot remake of 2010’s How To Train Your Dragon. Mason Thames stars as protagonist Hiccup Horrendous Haddock, the son of a Viking who goes against his family’s dragon-hunting legacy when he befriends Toothless the friendly dragon. Also starring Nico Parker, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur—and with Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast from the original—the 2025 How to Train Your Dragon movie is sure to bring back lots of memories for millennials and Gen Z.
