More spring weather is on the horizon for New England on Wednesday - The Boston Globe (2025)

Winds should remain light with a slight shift from the northwest, leaving the region a bit cooler versus Tuesday. But with the sun at a high angle and quite strong, daytime heating will bring temperatures back above average, with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. The evening will remain clear with lows in the 40s.

The setup

We have a pretty mundane weather setup for Wednesday, which is a good thing for everyone because you get to keep the umbrellas and jackets packed away. Basically, there’s not a whole lot of atmospheric drama to get excited about.

Our jet stream is essentially flat-lined west to east across the region - or, rather, we say it’s “zonal,” meaning the atmosphere isn’t very turbulent and will lead to fair weather conditions. Even if rain were in the picture (it is not today), the storm systems would be very weak.

So New England will see a pocket of relatively weak high pressure encroaching from the west, setting up a mostly sunny day with another shot of warmer-than-average air spreading through the region.

The simple atmospheric change from a southwesterly flow that drove temperatures up on Tuesday to a more northwesterly pattern on Wednesday will keep temperatures a few degrees cooler.

After a morning start in the upper 40s and low 50s, our afternoon highs will reach the upper 60s and low 70s across Southern New England.

The Lyrid meteor shower is still peaking and could be visible Tuesday night and Wednesday night, with mostly clear skies forecast across New England. You could see about 10 meteors an hour, maybe more if you’re away from light pollution.

This basic weather pattern will stay in place through Thursday until the weather shakes up, bringing our next chance of widespread rain into New England on, of course, another weekend where we might see a Saturday soaker. Early thoughts are that all of New England might catch over an inch a rain with a low-end chance for some creek or runoff flooding.
